History of the Pearl
Pearls have been used for a long time for jewelry and clothing. For example, pearls were found in various excavations, which shows that people in ancient Egypt and in Roman times were already familiar with pearls. The pearls from that time are all "natural pearls". This means that they have been made by molluscs in a natural way. Because nowadays most pearls are grown in nurseries, the natural pearls are actually only found in antique jewelry. Examples of cultivated pearls are the Akoya and Tahiti pearls. Grown pearls grow in freshwater mussels and consist entirely of mother -of -pearl. The colors of freshwater pearls are white, cream and soft pink.
